Every quarter, we do something that might sound strange for a brand with hundreds of its own designs: we hand the brush to someone else. We invite an emerging artist to reimagine Delft Blue in their own style, and we release it as a limited-edition collection of just 50 tiles per design. Here's why we do it, and why we think it makes the tradition stronger.
What is a Dutch Tile Project limited edition?
A limited edition is a small, numbered run created together with a guest artist. Once those tiles are gone, they're gone. Our first collaboration was the Floral Edition with illustrator Jill Rocket, available both as ready-made tiles and as a DIY kit so you can paint her florals yourself. You can see the full range in our limited-edition collection.
Why share the spotlight?
We started The Dutch Tile Project in 2023 to give a beloved tradition a modern twist. But a tradition doesn't stay alive by one voice repeating itself. It stays alive when new people bring their own perspective to it. Delft Blue has survived four centuries precisely because each generation reinterpreted it. Handing the brush to a different artist every quarter is our way of keeping that going, on purpose.
What it means for the artists
For an emerging artist, a limited edition is a real platform: their work on a centuries-old canvas, produced properly, packaged beautifully and shown to our whole community. We handle the ceramics, the production and the shipping, so they can focus on the art. It's collaboration in the truest sense, their vision, our craft.
What it means for you
For you, a limited edition is a chance to own something that won't be repeated. Because each design is capped at 50 tiles, it's genuinely rare, not "limited" in the marketing sense. It's a piece of art with a name and a story behind it, and a lovely gift for anyone who values the original over the mass-produced.
The bigger picture
We were the first to bring the modern Delft Blue design tile to life, and we take that seriously. Being the original isn't about standing still; it's about keeping the category interesting. Working with new artists is how we make sure Delft Blue keeps evolving, instead of becoming a museum piece.
